My Air Conditioner is not Cooling, Lower the Thermostat

“My Air Conditioner is not cooling the house and lowering the thermostat does not help.” We have heard that statement dozens of time. If your AC is running and cannot “keep up” with the demand, lowering the thermostat does not help. It does not make the unit run harder or faster. It does not make the A/C cool more efficiently. It simply lowers the point at which the unit will stop running IF and when it catches up with cooling the home.

Check Your Filter

The first step we recommend is that you inspect your return air filter. A dirty air filter can drastically reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system. If your filter is dirty then you must replace it. An A/C’s purpose is to lower the temperature of the interior coils and then blow air over them transferring the cold to the air and the heat into the coils. As well as the A/C may work to get the coils cold, if the proper amount of airflow is not passing over the coils the house will not cool in the time frame expected. Making sure your air filter is clean allows for maximum airflow

Heat Sources in Your Home

With the exception of changing the filter, there is not much that you can do to the system to improve the efficiency at the time of need. The next step is to check the environment the system is working in at the time. Are there additional heat sources in the location – extra people (party), ovens, cooktops, open doors? All of these items can bring additional heat into your home. Although you can not/should not ask guests to leave during a party you may consider turning off any unnecessary cooking devices and make sure doors and windows are closed as much as possible.

Keeping It Cool

If you are having a party, you may want to lower the home’s temperature two hours before the event. It may be chilly at the start of the event, but will warm up quickly. Think about when you attend an event at a venue. Usually, it starts out chilly and then ends comfortably. The operators of the event know that they have to cool the facility before the guests arrive to keep it comfortable for the duration of the event.

Possibly In Need of Repairs

So if you are not having a party, the house is closed up and normal, and the heat outside is normal for the time of year, then you should consult an expert for repair advice. An HVAC system has many different components, such as fans, blowers, coils and a compressor. A malfunction of any component may decrease the system’s efficiency or shut the system down completely.

HVAC Service Contract

The last item to discuss is regular, professional service of your HVAC. A professional technician will inspect your A/C for issues such as a low refrigerant level. The tech will also clean the unit’s inside and outside coils if required, and ensure that there is no debris around your outside unit. In addition, the tech will advise you on the status of your filter. We recommend two service check-ups per year.
